Zagreb to Split, Dubrovnik & Croatian islands
Take a scenic train ride from Zagreb to Split, then take a bus from Split to Dubrovnik or a ferry from Split to one of the Adriatic islands. The journey is part of the fun.
Zagreb to Split by train

Daytime trains
There are one or (in summer) two daytime trains on this scenic route every day:
Leave Zagreb 07:03, arrive Split 13:45. Runs 27-30 March, 1 April, 7 June to 29 September, 28-31October 2024.
Leave Zagreb 15:18, arrive Split 21:53. Runs daily all year round.
The ICN trains are comfortable and air-conditioned with 1st & 2nd class seats. Bring your own food & drink.

Sleeper train
A sleeper train leaves Zagreb at 22:30 arriving Split 07:01. Runs Friday nights all year round, daily 29 June to 30 August 2024.
The sleeper train has a sleeping-car with 1, 2 & 3 berth compartments and two couchette cars with 6 berth compartments.

The standard fare is around 28 in 2nd class or 41 in 1st class.
Online fares start at 15.10 in 2nd class or 22.65 in 1st class, even close to departure date.

You print your own ticket or can show it on your phone. It can book seats & couchettes, but not sleepers.
Or it's easy to buy tickets at the station, there are almost always places available.

Zagreb to Split is a very scenic train ride, with mountains, lakes, rivers, and even vineyards. The trains are modern and air-conditioned, although there's no catering so bring your own food & drink. ICN trains tilt round the bends on this mountainous route, cutting the journey time to 6 hours from a previous best of around 8 hours. Seat reservation is compulsory on ICN trains. In the summer there's also a sleeper train with sleeping-car & couchettes, but this starts in Osijek and passes through Zagreb at 01:10 on its way to Split.
Split to Dubrovnik by bus

Buses link Split bus station with Dubrovnik every hour or half hour, run by various companies, journey time between 3h45 & 4h35, fare around 13-17.

There are plenty of buses & plenty of seats, just buy a ticket at the bus station when you get to Split.
Split to Hvar, Korcula, Vis, Brac by ferry

Zagreb to Ljubljana from 9

Several trains link Zagreb & Ljubljana every day, a lovely scenic train ride through the hills along the beautiful River Sava.
Departures from Zagreb to Ljubljana: 07:05, 12:50, 19:40. Journey time 2h15.
Times may vary, check times with German Railways at int.bahn.de or Austrian Railways at fahrplan.oebb.at.

Tickets cannot be bought online, but you can easily buy tickets at the station for around 18, or just 9 with an advance-purchase ticket if you buy the day before or earlier. There's no need to buy way ahead as there are always places available even on the day.

These trains also link Zagreb with Lesce-Bled for Lake Bled, journey time 3h15 or so, simply check times at int.bahn.de.
Zagreb to London, Paris, Brussels, Luxembourg, Amsterdam
Option 1, using the Zagreb-Stuttgart sleeper train - the most time-effective option

Day 1, travel from Zagreb to Stuttgart by sleeper train Lisinski, leaving Zagreb at 19:40 arriving Stuttgart Hbf 08:38.
The train has a modern air-conditioned Croatian sleeping-car with 1, 2 & 3 bed compartments, a modern air-conditioned Croatian couchette car with 4 & 6 berth compartments and ordinary seats. See the Croatian sleeping-car video. There's no catering car so bring a picnic and bottle of wine. Morning tea or coffee is included in sleepers. In summer when it's light there is wonderful scenery along the river Sava between Zagreb & Ljubljana.
From 8 December to 7 January, 21 March to 7 April & 8 May to 28 September 2024, there's a direct Croatian sleeping-car from Rijeka, leaving Rijeka at 18:57, also arriving Stuttgart Hbf 08:38.

Day 2, travel from Stuttgart to Paris, Brussels, Luxembourg or Amsterdam, allowing at least 60 minutes between trains. For example:
The 09:51 from Stuttgart Hbf, change at Cologne Hbf, reaches Amsterdam Centraal at 15:29.
The 10:37 from Stuttgart Hbf, change at Frankfurt (Main) Flughafen, reaches Brussels Midi at 15:35.
The 10:52 ICE train from Stuttgart Hbf reaches Paris Est at 14:13.
All these trains have a restaurant or cafe-bar, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi.

Tip: Change Transfer time from normal to 30 minutes. I'd allow at least 1 hour between trains in Stuttgart.

Option 2, by comfortable daytime trains with an overnight stop in Munich

Day 1, travel from Zagreb to Munich by train, leaving Zagreb at 12:50 with one easy change at Villach, arriving Munich Hbf 21:41.
Or take the morning direct train leaving Zagreb at 07:05 also with one easy change at Villach, arriving Munich Hbf 15:41.
This is a lovely scenic run along the pretty river Sava from Zagreb into Slovenia, then through the mountains of Austria on the Tauern route to Salzburg and Germany. The trains are comfortable and air-conditioned.

Stay overnight in Munich. The affordable Eden Hotel Wolff & NH Collection Mόnchen are across the road from the station's north side exit with great reviews. Or consider the more upmarket 25 Hours Hotel The Royal Bavarian, Excelsior by Giesel & Mercure City Center. For a splurge, the luxurious Sofitel Munich Beyerpost occupies the former Royal Bavarian Post Office building of 1896-1900, at the station's south side exit.

Day 2, travel from Munich to Paris, Brussels, Luxembourg or Amsterdam, for example:
For Paris, the 06:49 TGV Duplex from Munich Hbf arrives Paris Est at 12:33, see the Munich-Paris TGV video.
For Amsterdam, the 07:47 ICE from Munich Hbf, change Frankfurt Flughafen onto another ICE, arrives Amsterdam Centraal 15:29.
For Brussels, the 07:47 ICE from Munich Hbf, change at Siegburg/Bonn onto another ICE, arrives Brussels Midi at 15:35.
But by all means have a leisurely breakfast and take a later train.

Option 4, using the Nightjet sleeper train from Vienna to Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam & Cologne

This is not the fastest option because of the free time between trains in Vienna, but what's not to like about an afternoon in the Austrian capital? With a lovely scenic journey from Zagreb to Vienna via the UNESCO-listed Semmering Railway, then a high-quality Nightjet sleeper train, this option is worth considering if you're heading from Zagreb to Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam or Cologne.
Step 1, travel from Zagreb to Vienna, leaving Zagreb at 07:05, change at Graz (11:22-11:26), arriving Vienna Hbf at 14:02.
Zagreb to Graz is by comfortable EuroCity train, Graz to Vienna is by swish Austrian railjet with restaurant car, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi. A Nightjet leaves Vienna Hbf at 18:13 on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Sundays, arriving Cologne Hbf 06:58 & Brussels Midi 09:55.
A Nightjet leaves Vienna Hbf at 20:10 every day and arrives Amsterdam Centraal 09:50.
Until 14 December 2024, the days of running of the Vienna-Paris/Brussels train are Monday, Wednesday & Friday.

Hotels near Venice Mestre on the mainland are usually cheaper, but I'd never miss a chance to stay in Venice itself if I could.

It's a lovely journey along the coast between Genoa and Nice, have your camera ready!

You travel from Zagreb to Ljubljana by express train, from Ljubljana to Trieste by EuroCity or regional train, then Trieste to Venice by regional train. Zagreb-Ljubljana costs as little as 9, then Ljubljana to Venice costs 22 or so, any day, any date, no prior reservation necessary, it cannot sell out, just buy at the station on the day. The Lisinski has an excellent air-conditioned Croatian sleeping-car (1, 2 & 3 bed compartments with washbasin), a modern air-conditioned Croatian couchette car (4 & 6 berth compartments) and ordinary seats (not recommended). Zagreb to Budapest from 15

A comfortable InterCity train called the Agram leaves Zagreb at 16:35 arriving Budapest Dιli 22:24.
The Agram consists of one comfortable air-conditioned Hungarian car with open-plan 2nd class seats and one air-conditioned Croatian car with 6-seat 2nd class compartments, attached to various other cars only going part of the way. There's no 1st class and no catering so take your own picnic & wine.
The train runs along the southern shore of Lake Balaton, with great views over the lake. The lake will be on the left hand side of the train.

How to buy tickets
You can book Zagreb to Budapest trains at the Hungarian Railways website jegy.mav.hu, see my advice on using it.
Booking normally opens 60 days ahead, less than this when the mid-December timetable change intervenes. You print your own ticket or can show it in the MAV app on your phone.
If you don't succeed in buying online, simply buy at the station either on the day or ideally a day or two beforehand. Tip: It's cheaper to buy in advance, even when buying close to departure. The fare might be 39 bought 15 minutes before departure, but 29 if you buy at least 2h before departure or the day before.
Zagreb to Sarajevo

Zagreb to Belgrade, Sofia, Athens, Istanbul

Travel from Zagreb to Belgrade on the daily train, leaving Zagreb at 11:04 arriving Novi Beograd 18:04 & Belgrade Centar at 18:12.
This train was suspended due to Covid-19 and remains suspended in 2024.
It's 2nd class only, there's no catering car so bring your own food & drink.
Zagreb to Belgrade costs around £44 bought in the UK, or just 29 or so bought locally. It's easy to buy a ticket at the station, or you can simply board the train and pay when the conductor comes round.
You can check train times using the journey planner at int.bahn.de. There's no restaurant or buffet car, just the occasional on-board vendor, so bring your own picnic and even bottle of wine or beer.
While the train is suspended, take a bus from Zagreb to Belgrade
It's a 17-minute 1.3 km walk from Zagreb station to Zagreb bus station, see walking map.
A Flixbus leaves Zagreb bus station at 09:00, arriving Belgrade bus station at 14:30. There are later buses at 14:00 and 16:45.
The fare is around 20, buy a ticket at www.flixbus.com.

Get a Curve card for foreign travel
Most banks give you a poor exchange rate, then add a foreign transaction fee on top. A Curve MasterCard means no foreign transaction fees and gives you the mid-market exchange rate, at least up to a certain limit, £500 per month at time of writing. The money you spend on your Curve card goes straight onto one of your existing debit or credit cards.
How it works: 1. Download the Curve app for iPhone or Android. 2. Enter your details & they'll send you a Curve MasterCard - they send to the UK and most European addresses. 3. Link your existing credit & debit cards to the app, you can link up to two cards with the free version of Curve, I link my normal debit card and my normal credit card. 4. Now use the Curve MasterCard to buy things online or in person or take cash from ATMs, exactly like a normal MasterCard. Curve does the currency conversion and puts the balance in your own currency onto whichever debit or credit card is currently selected in the Curve app. You can even change your mind about which card it goes onto, within 14 days of the transaction.
I have a Curve Blue card myself, it means I can buy a coffee on a foreign station on a card without being stung by fees and lousy exchange rates, just by tapping the Curve card on their card reader. The money goes through Curve to my normal debit card and is taken directly from my account (in fact I have the Curve card set up as payment card on Apple Pay on my iPhone, so can double-click my phone, let it do Face ID then tap the reader with the phone - even easier than digging a card out).
